Meet The Team: Kate

Updated: Feb 25

Okay so we came through and told you all about Shaque’l earlier this month but today we’re continuing our Meet the Team mini-series with one of our favorite people: Kate!

Our native Austinite (Austonian? Unicorn?) has been a badass in the tech industry for over seven years and is always ready with an encouraging word or a joke that will have you on your ass in two seconds flat from laughing so hard. So let's get into it and learn a little more about our favorite sunflower.

Introduce yourself and your job role for us.

Hi, I'm Kate Lyle. I'm the operations manager here at 6 Figure Chick Consulting. That means I’m responsible for helping to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes. I'm also the resident Slack emoji creator.

Where are you from?

I'm actually from right here in Austin, TX. People say it’s rare to find anyone who lives in Austin that’s actually from here but I was born and raised here.

When is your birthday and what's your zodiac sign?

My birthday is June 17th. I'm a Gemini sun, a Gemini moon and a Virgo rising.

Oh you had that info ready for us! Tell us a little bit about your career experience.

So I got my first job when I was 16. I worked at a movie theater and later on worked my way up to being a manager there as well. That's when I realized I really loved people. That's my “why” … I love being with people and helping them grow.

After the movie theater I worked in retail. I've sold wedding dresses. I've worked at Target. I worked at HEB. Mostly in supervisory/managerial roles. My last job was at an ecommerce startup. I was there for seven and a half years.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to help everyone on my team grow, to help them recognize their skills and strengths (especially if they thought they couldn't do something). I like empowering others to reach their fullest potential and now I get to do that every day!

Tell us about your most recent career transition and how you started working at 6 Figure Chick Consulting.

At my last job I worked my way up from customer service to being a director of customer success. During that time I was very lucky to hire Shaque’l. It was her first tech job and we remained friends over the years. We loved working together. Last year, when I was laid off, she gave me the opportunity to come and work here as a career strategist. I jumped at the opportunity because it actually spoke to my skill set really well.

One of my favorite parts of managing people has always been the “What do you want to be when you grow up?” conversation because then I can help them upskill in order to get promotions. I want to see people succeed. Getting to help clients do that and find better jobs is a dream come true.

What's a piece of advice you would give someone making a career change or job transition?

If you're making a job change or career transition, I think the most important thing to do is really think about what you enjoy doing. You spend a lot of time at work so it's really important to enjoy and get some sort of fulfillment out of what you're doing.

And then the other thing, of course, would be to apply like a man. Don't sell yourself short, you know? Don't reject yourself. Let them do that. Give them the opportunity to tell you “no” instead of just assuming they will. And get used to being told no. There are going to be plenty of rejections. But those are just re-directions to the role that you really want.

How has 6 Figure Chick Consulting changed your mindset/perspective?

Working here has made it easier for me to focus on what we have versus what we don’t. Being surrounded by such amazing coworkers and clients makes it easy to focus on abundance instead of what we lack. It makes me think about what we can do rather than what we can't. It forces us to take a problem and think up a myriad of solutions rather than assuming “this won’t work” or that we’re at a stopping point.

It's also been  really incredible to be surrounded by so many Black women and women of color who are at the top of their game. I really enjoy getting to know everyone and feeling like I can be myself at work.

How has 6 Figure Chick Consulting impacted your lifestyle?

Working with six Figure Consulting has allowed me to work from home. It’s allowed me to get to know women from all different walks of life and people from all over the country. It has allowed me to take care of my family and my daughters, and to show them that you can do both; that you can be successful in a career that you love, and you can be a good mom. You can be a good wife. You can enjoy time with your husband, eat the best food in town, and also wear sweatpants to work.

Let's answer some fun and fluffy questions to wrap this up. What's your favorite color?

My favorite color is yellow.

Favorite food?

If I had to pick a last meal my favorite food is probably either lobster rolls or queso. I would just say cheese but queso is incredible and it's something I grew up on. The Mag Mud from Magnolia Cafe will forever be my favorite food.

Flats or drums?

Flats. I know the correct answer.

But which do you prefer?

Cheese.

How do you like to spend your free time?

With my family! I’m also restarting my garden so that keeps me pretty busy. And I love watching tv and movies. I’m a walking IMDB.

Last but not least, what do you love/appreciate most about Shaquel?

The thing I love most about Shaque’l is her genuine authenticity. She not only pushes you to be the best version of yourself, but she accepts and meets you exactly where you are. And the way that she shows up genuinely as herself every day, and invites us all to do the same thing is amazing.

If I'm a sunflower, always looking for the sunshine, then Shaque’l is that sunshine. She is capable of bringing out the best in everyone around her just by being herself and inviting each of us to do the same.

I couldn't agree more. Thanks for sharing your story with us!

Absolutely! Thanks to everyone reading this!
